 INEC Chairman Applauds Soludo for Improved Security in Anambra Ahead of 2025 Governorship Poll

ABUJA, Nigeria — The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has commended Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for the significant improvement in the state’s security architecture, describing it as a key achievement ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

Prof. Yakubu gave the commendation on Thursday, June 26, 2025, during his opening remarks at the second quarterly consultative meeting with political parties, held at the INEC Conference Room in Abuja.

According to Mazi Ejimofor, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Soludo on New Media, the INEC Chairman noted that the prevailing atmosphere in Anambra is calm and peaceful — a positive turnaround from previous years.

“The INEC Chairman applauded the governor for this achievement and urged him to sustain the current security tempo and safeguard the security architecture in place to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and credible electoral process,” Ejimofor stated.

Prof. Yakubu recalled the dire security situation that plagued preparations for the 2021 governorship election in Anambra, lamenting the attacks on INEC’s state headquarters in Awka, which resulted in parts of the facility being torched and several Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines destroyed.

He added that several INEC local government offices were also set ablaze during that period, with staff assaulted and sensitive electoral materials worth billions of naira lost.

Against this backdrop, Prof. Yakubu emphasized the importance of maintaining the current peaceful climate in the state to avoid a repeat of the violence that marred the 2021 poll.
