Soludo Approves Rehabilitation of More Schools to Boost Education in Anambra

AWKA, June 19, 2025 — In a major push to upgrade public education in Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has approved the rehabilitation of additional schools as part of his ongoing transformation of the education sector.

The decision was reached during the 11th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), held at the Light House, Awka.

According to the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the move is part of the administration’s strategic plan to elevate learning standards, improve infrastructure, and expand access to quality education across the state.

Dr. Mefor disclosed that schools that had previously received little attention will now benefit from the state’s renewed focus, following the clearance of inherited counterpart funding arrears up to 2024. He added that the anticipated release of the Federal Government's share of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) counterpart funding will further bolster the initiative.

“The aim is to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning. This administration is determined to improve the quality of education and the physical conditions of our public schools,” Mefor said.

As part of the effort, the Council approved the reconstruction of Boys’ Secondary School, Uga, which is to serve as a model secondary school for others in the state.

This latest intervention aligns with the broader education reforms being implemented by Governor Soludo. Highlights of these reforms include:

Extension of the free education policy up to Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3);

Recruitment of 3,115 additional teachers, bringing the total number of newly hired teachers under his administration to 8,115;

Equipping over 60 secondary school science laboratories with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) tools;

Procurement of smart boards and tablets for teachers in the state’s 22 designated smart schools;

Increased operational budgets for both primary and secondary schools to enhance academic performance and school management.

Governor Soludo’s education reforms also extend to higher institutions. In a remarkable gesture, the governor recently restored electricity supply to the Uli campus of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Ihiala Local Government Area—ending a 21-year power outage. He also signed off on the provision of free internet access for the university community.

Dr. Mefor emphasized that these measures reflect Governor Soludo’s unwavering commitment to making Anambra a knowledge-driven society and a model for education reform in Nigeria.
