World Environment Day: First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Calls for United Action Against Plastic Pollution

As the global community marks World Environment Day 2025, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has urged Nigerians to take collective responsibility in tackling the growing threat of plastic pollution.

In a statement commemorating the day, which has the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” the First Lady described plastic waste as one of the most urgent environmental challenges confronting the world today, with dire consequences for human health, the natural ecosystem, and future generations.

“Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, affecting our health, our environment, and our future,” she said.

Senator Tinubu emphasized the need for behavioral change, particularly in how Nigerians consume packaged food and dispose of plastic bags and containers. She encouraged citizens to embrace more sustainable practices and reduce their dependence on single-use plastics.

Addressing young Nigerians specifically, the First Lady reminded them of their vital role in building a cleaner and greener future.

“I particularly want to speak to our youth, the leaders of tomorrow. Be it in schools or within our neighborhoods, each of you has a role to play in creating a cleaner, healthier and greener Nigeria,” she stated.

She joined millions around the world in calling for urgent and united efforts to protect the environment and wished Nigerians a meaningful and reflective World Environment Day.

World Environment Day, celebrated every June 5, is a global platform for raising awareness and encouraging action for the protection of the environment.
