First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Mourns the Passing of Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona



Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – July 14, 2025 — The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, who transitioned at the age of 91 after a remarkable 65-year reign.

In a condolence message released on Sunday, the First Lady described the late monarch as an iconic traditional ruler whose reign was marked by wisdom, stability, and a deep commitment to the development and cultural preservation of the Ijebu people.

“I commiserate with the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, the royal family, and the entire people of Ijebuland on the passing of the Awujale, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona,” she said. “Oba Adetona was a great monarch whose wisdom, dignity, and dedication to the heritage and progress of Ijebuland will forever remain in our collective memory.”

Senator Tinubu noted that Oba Adetona’s 65-year reign was one of the longest and most impactful in Nigerian history, describing him as a bridge between generations and a monarch who combined respect for tradition with visionary leadership.

“He stood as a symbol of continuity, embracing tradition while promoting modernization and the welfare of his people. His reign brought peace, progress, and prestige to the Ijebu Kingdom,” she added.

The First Lady, herself of Ijebu origin, conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the royal household, including the Oloris, princes and princesses, the Council of Chiefs, and all sons and daughters of Ijebuland, stating that the loss is personal and deeply felt.

“As a daughter of the land, I feel your grief, and it is shared by all Nigerians who held our revered monarch in the highest esteem,” she said.

She prayed for eternal peace for the late monarch and strength for his family and subjects during this period of mourning.

“May Almighty Allah grant His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, peaceful repose in the embrace of his ancestors, and grant comfort to his family, the people of Ijebuland, and all who mourn his departure.”

Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was widely respected as a custodian of culture, an advocate for justice, and a pillar of progressive leadership in Nigeria’s traditional institution.
