Lagos Temporarily Suspends BRT Lane Enforcement on Eko Bridge, Odo Iya-Alaro Amid Ifako Bridge Repairs
In a bid to ease the worsening traffic situation caused by the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ifako Bridge expansion joint, the Lagos State Government has announced the temporary suspension of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane enforcement along the Eko Bridge and Odo Iya-Alaro corridors.
The decision, approved by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, is aimed at reducing the travel burden on motorists navigating major ingress points into the Lagos Mainland.
According to Giwa, the move is a strategic and temporary intervention to mitigate the congestion expected from the partial closure of the Ifako-bound carriageway on the Third Mainland corridor.
"We understand the pressure commuters are currently facing. This tactical suspension is designed to provide immediate relief, ease travel time, and ensure a smoother flow of traffic while repair works are ongoing," he said.
With the directive now in effect, private vehicles are permitted to use the previously restricted BRT lanes on Eko Bridge and Odo Iya-Alaro during peak hours. However, commercial buses and articulated vehicles are expected to comply strictly with traffic safety regulations and loading guidelines to prevent further traffic complications.
To enforce the new directive, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been deployed to monitor traffic flow, ensure compliance, and respond swiftly to any issues that may arise.
Speaking on the agency’s preparedness, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan, confirmed that additional personnel and equipment have been mobilised to maintain order and prevent misuse of the temporary policy.
“Our officers are on the ground across the affected corridors, coordinating movement and maintaining traffic discipline. We urge all road users to cooperate and show a sense of civic responsibility during this period,” he stated.
Motorists have also been advised to explore alternative routes, consider shifting travel times, and stay updated through official traffic advisories broadcast via radio, digital platforms, and the LASTMA toll-free hotline: 0800-0052-7862 (0800-00LASTMA).
