Oyo SEMA Issues Flood Alert as Heavy Rainfall Looms Across Ibadan and Environs

IBADAN, JULY 22, 2025 — The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has issued a warning to residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to brace for heavy rainfall and potential flooding in several parts of the state.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Administrative Secretary of the agency, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari, disclosed that data from the Oyo State Flood Early Warning System indicates a high likelihood of intense downpours in the eastern and northeastern corridors of Ibadan.

According to Busari, areas most at risk include parts of Lagelu Local Government Area, especially Iyana Offa, eastern Moniya, and surrounding communities stretching towards the Osun State boundary.

She further noted that Egbeda LGA, particularly its eastern edges and locations bordering Lagelu, are also expected to experience substantial rainfall today. Communities situated along the Ibadan-Ife Road (A5 highway)—including Egbeda and adjoining areas—are advised to stay alert.

The forecast also covers a broad portion of Ibadan Metropolis, including its eastern and central zones. Specific areas mentioned include IITA, Ibadan Airport, University of Ibadan, Ojoo, Akobo, Basorun, Gate, Challenge, and Ring Road, among other densely populated neighbourhoods.

In addition, eastern and central parts of Akinyele LGA, as well as northeastern sections of Oluyole LGA, are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall.

Mrs. Busari assured residents that OYSEMA, in collaboration with relevant government agencies, civil society organisations, and volunteer groups, is fully mobilised to respond swiftly to emergencies and provide support where necessary.

“In simpler terms, if you are in or traveling through the eastern and northeastern parts of Ibadan today, particularly areas along the major roads heading east and north, you should expect significant rainfall, potentially leading to localized flooding,” she explained.

She urged residents to take precautionary measures immediately to safeguard lives and property, stressing that “discretion is the better part of valour.”
