FRSC Corps Marshal Urges Truck Owners to Renew Fleets, Ensure Maintenance as Kano Crash Claims 12 Lives
Kano – The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has urged truck owners and operators across the country to prioritise routine maintenance and gradual replacement of old, unsafe vehicles in their fleets. He warned that the Corps would enforce stiffer sanctions against operators who endanger lives by transporting goods, animals, and passengers in the same vehicle.
The warning followed a fatal crash that claimed 12 lives in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025, at Samawa Village, Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State, along the Zaria–Kano Highway.
According to a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the lone crash involved a DAF trailer with registration number KMC 931 ZE, which was loaded with goods (Ajinomoto spices) and passengers.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a mechanical fault occurred when the trailer’s cab hook broke, causing the cab to detach from the trailer body, leading to a total loss of control.
Out of 19 people on board, 12 died on the spot, five sustained varying degrees of injury, while two escaped unhurt. The deceased were taken to Nasarawa Hospital Mortuary, and the injured are receiving treatment at Kura General Hospital.
Reacting to the incident, Corps Marshal Mohammed described the tragedy as “avoidable,” stressing that preventable crashes caused by mechanical defects, overloading, and unsafe practices continue to claim lives unnecessarily.
He restated FRSC’s commitment to intensified enforcement of speed limits, vehicle maintenance standards, and safety regulations, particularly within the haulage sector.
“Haulage companies must adopt modern fleet renewal practices and stop the recurring pattern of preventable road crashes. The safety of Nigeria’s highways is a shared responsibility, and all stakeholders must work together to save lives,” he said.
