Police Restore Calm in Onosa Community After Clash With Residents

LAGOS — The Lagos State Police Command says it has restored peace in Onosa community, Elemoro area of Lagos, following a clash between security operatives and residents in the early hours of Friday, August 29, 2025.

According to a statement made available to the National Association of Online Security News Publishers (NAOSNP) and signed by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, six police officers from Elemoro Division, while on routine patrol, encountered an angry mob.

“In the course of ensuring their own safety, the officers used their firearms, resulting in three individuals sustaining injuries. The injured persons were taken to hospital for medical attention,” Hundeyin said.

CP Jimoh Intervenes

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a team of officers to the scene in response to the incident.

His swift intervention, according to Hundeyin, led to the dismantling of barricades mounted by the mob, restoring free flow of traffic in the area.

“CP Jimoh also moved deep into the community and engaged with youth and community leaders in the neighborhood to de-escalate tensions and foster understanding. He has further extended an invitation to these leaders for continued dialogue to address concerns and prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.

Officers in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

The police confirmed that the officers involved in the shooting have been taken into custody as investigations begin.

“The Lagos State Police Command is committed to a thorough and transparent inquiry to establish the facts surrounding the event,” Hundeyin assured.

Peace Restored

Normalcy has since returned to Onosa, with significant police presence maintained to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

The Command urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with law enforcement, and refrain from actions that could disrupt public peace.

Hundeyin added that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
