Olowa Inspects Cleared Primary Canals in Ibeju-Lekki to Tackle Flooding

The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Monday, inspected ongoing flood mitigation works in Alakun, Baba Adisa, and Aiyeteju communities.

The inspection covered primary drainage clearance projects where swamp excavators are being used to decongest blocked water channels and canals. The intervention is aimed at ensuring the smooth flow of rainwater into proper outlets, thereby reducing the risks of flooding, erosion, and potential damage to lives and property.

Speaking during the exercise, Olowa said the project is part of his administration’s proactive strategy to tackle perennial flooding in the area, especially during the rainy season. He noted that keeping critical water channels functional would help safeguard communities, improve sanitation, and enhance the overall well-being of residents.

“This is about prevention rather than cure. By opening up these water channels, we are protecting homes, businesses, and lives from avoidable disasters,” the council boss stated.

The Chairman was accompanied by his Chief Technical Adviser on Environment, Mr. Lateef Ajumobi; CTA on Media and Communication, Mr. Yemi Azeez; Personal Assistant, Mr. Adewale Moore; representative of the Environment Department, Mr. Kolapo Olabode; and the CDA Chairman, Mr. Agbaji Olushola. Their presence, according to Olowa, underscored the collaborative nature of the initiative, combining government action with community partnership.

The inspection exercise is one of a series of measures being rolled out by the Ibeju-Lekki council to mitigate environmental hazards and strengthen resilience against flooding.
