Oyo Govt Warns New JPs Against Interfering in Criminal Cases

The Oyo State Government has cautioned newly appointed and prospective Justices of the Peace (JPs) to uphold fairness, integrity, and impartiality in discharging their duties, warning them not to interfere in criminal matters beyond their jurisdiction.

The warning was issued by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Ayodeji Abiodun Aikomo, Esq., during the screening of more than 300 applicants seeking conferment of the honorary JP title. The exercise took place at the Ministry of Justice Conference Room, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to the Commissioner, the rigorous two-day screening was aimed at ensuring that only credible and competent individuals are selected. He emphasized that the JP role is not ceremonial but a call to service, requiring responsibility, confidentiality, and a commitment to peacebuilding at the grassroots.

“Uphold integrity, act without bias, maintain confidentiality, and serve with fairness. Do not take sides in disputes, do not exploit the position for personal gain, and do not interfere in criminal cases beyond your jurisdiction,” Aikomo cautioned.

He explained that JPs are expected to mediate minor civil disputes, promote peace and order in their communities, and support the justice system by witnessing affidavits and other legal documents.

Earlier, the Director of the Citizens Mediation Centre, Mrs. Adeola Ige Adeleke, urged applicants to study the JP manuals to gain deeper knowledge of their responsibilities, while the Director of Administration and Supplies, Mrs. Fatimo Yusuf, reminded them that the role is fundamentally about “making peace, building harmony, and supporting justice based on truth.”

The screening panel, made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Justice and allied agencies, assessed applicants on their integrity, track record of community service, and understanding of the JP mandate.

The Oyo State Government said the exercise underscores its commitment to strengthening grassroots justice and ensuring that only men and women of proven character are entrusted with the honorary title. Successful candidates will be formally conferred with the JP honour after the completion of due diligence.
