Police Deny Torturing Sowore, Say Arrest Was Over Criminal Offences

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed social media reports alleging that activist and publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, was tortured while in custody.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police said Sowore was lawfully arrested based on “credible and corroborated allegations” of criminal offences, including forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under investigation.

The statement stressed that the arrest was carried out in compliance with legal procedures, constitutional safeguards, and due process. Sowore, according to the Police, was released on bail within the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period and is expected to appear before a competent court soon.

On the viral photo of Sowore with a bandaged arm, the Police clarified that it was part of his personal belongings before his arrest, dismissing claims it was linked to any injury sustained in custody. The Inspector-General of Police has ordered an internal probe into how Sowore accessed the bandage while in detention, especially after he twice refused independent medical examinations offered by Police medical teams on August 7 and 8.

The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on torture, in line with the Anti-Torture Act, 2017, and relevant international human rights obligations. It also maintained that Sowore’s detention was backed by a valid court order, describing the process as lawful, transparent, and devoid of political bias.

Urging the media and civil society to avoid sensationalism, the Police reaffirmed its commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and justice without fear or favour.
