IBLCDA Chairman Brokers Peace Between Police and Youths in Ikorodu

The Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ọmọ’ba Hammed Olalekan Aroyewun, has initiated a peace-building intervention to address growing concerns over the conduct of police tactical teams in Ikorodu and its environs.

The meeting, held on Sunday at the Ikorodu Divisional Police Headquarters, brought together police officers and youth representatives for open dialogue on issues of harassment, intimidation, and strained police–community relations, particularly in Ijede, Imota, and Igbe.

At the session, youth stakeholders conveyed grievances on alleged misconduct by some operatives, stressing that while they support the fight against crime, they demand professionalism and civility in policing. They also called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement and the community to build trust and ensure mutual respect.

Responding, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ikorodu, CSP Akinola Clement, acknowledged the complaints and assured that corrective steps were being taken by the Lagos State Police Command to strengthen public confidence. He noted that the Commissioner of Police had shown commitment to improving police–youth relations in the division.

Similarly, CSP Amos Ibrahim of Ijede Police Division pledged that the era of brutality and extortion must give way to civil, people-oriented policing.

Following deliberations, key resolutions were reached, including the suspension of a planned youth protest, the creation of stronger communication channels between police and community leaders, and the directive that all cases of misconduct should be promptly reported to designated officers. A larger stakeholders’ meeting will also be convened to build on the progress made.

Chairman Aroyewun, while commending both the police and youth groups for their maturity and constructive engagement, emphasized his administration’s commitment to proactive intervention and continuous dialogue. He noted that only through partnership could Igbogbo/Baiyeku achieve lasting peace, safety, and development.

CSP Clement lauded the council chairman for his proactive leadership, describing his timely intervention as crucial in averting a breakdown of law and order and fostering a more coordinated approach to community security.
