 Ikorodu Division Rolls Out Mass Education Programme for Youths and Adults

Traditional leaders, government agencies, and community groups rally support for literacy, skills, and empowerment drive

A major push to tackle illiteracy and expand access to skills training has kicked off in Ikorodu Division with the launch of the Lagos State Mass Education Programme. The sensitization campaign, held on Monday at the Adeboruwa Palace, brought together key government officials, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to mobilise residents for the initiative.

The programme, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education in collaboration with the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education and the National Agency for Mass Education, is designed to provide literacy, vocational training, and entrepreneurship opportunities to residents aged 15 and above.

Leading the sensitization team, Prince Kasali Adeniran Waheed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, said the initiative aims to restore dignity and create fresh opportunities for those who may have missed out on education earlier in life. He was joined by Mrs. Oluwakemi Yetunde Kalesanwo, Director of the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education; Mr. Adelani Akinpelu, representing the National Agency for Mass Education; and Mr. Mustapha Ibrahim, Director of Monitoring and Investigation.

Traditional institutions, represented by the Adeboruwa-in-Council and led by High Chief Tajudeen Onasanya, Odofin of Igbogbo, pledged full support for the programme and have begun mobilising residents to register. Community Development Committees (CDCs), student unions, and youth groups also pledged active participation.

Registration Guidelines

• Open to all residents aged 15 years and above.
• Requirements include full name, National Identification Number (NIN), date of birth, telephone number, age, and community name.
• Registration runs for one week (Monday to Saturday).

Benefits for Participants

• Communities with the highest number of registrants will be prioritised for new government facilities such as vocational centres.
• Participants applying for vocational training or business start-ups may qualify for starter packs or financial support.
• Graduates seeking entrepreneurship opportunities are also encouraged to register.

Speaking on behalf of the Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, stakeholders stressed that the programme is not only about literacy but also about preparing communities for sustainable growth through data-driven planning, entrepreneurship, and inclusive development.

Residents across the Ikorodu Division are urged to take advantage of the initiative, described as a “second chance” for education and empowerment.
