LASTMA Warns Transport Unions Against Use of Illegal ‘Union Stickers’ as Vehicle Identifiers

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to transport unions and affiliated associations over the unlawful use of ‘union stickers’ as substitutes for legitimate vehicle registration numbers across the state.

General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the practice as a serious breach of regulatory standards and a major security risk. He stressed that all vehicles operating in Lagos must be properly registered through government-approved agencies in line with existing laws.

Bakare-Oki warned that the continued proliferation of unauthorised identifiers not only compromises public safety but also undermines effective law enforcement.

“The Lagos State Government will not condone any attempt by individuals or groups to bypass established registration procedures. Any vehicle found using ‘union stickers’ or other unauthorised symbols in place of registration numbers will be impounded, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,” he stated.

The LASTMA boss disclosed that the agency, in collaboration with security operatives and other enforcement bodies, will intensify surveillance across key transport corridors to ensure compliance.

He further appealed to transport unions to obey the law, noting that proper vehicle registration is crucial for orderliness, safety, and the security of Lagos residents.

LASTMA assured the motoring public that strict enforcement will continue as part of government’s commitment to sanitising the transport sector, safeguarding lives, and preserving property.
