Police Arrest Self-Acclaimed “Obi of Lagos” Over Alleged ₦1.5bn Palace Fraud

Lagos — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Engr. Chibuike Azubike, who falsely proclaimed himself the “Obi of Lagos” and allegedly attempted to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians through a bogus ₦1.5 billion palace project.

Azubike, who had announced plans to unveil a prototype of the so-called palace on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin, was arrested along with three other suspects linked to the scheme.

Police investigations revealed that Azubike, who had been parading himself as an engineer, later confessed to being only a supplier of construction materials to companies. Authorities say he used the false title “engineer” to bolster his credibility.

According to the police, the planned palace unveiling was nothing more than a fraudulent ploy to swindle dignitaries and unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of celebrating a new traditional institution in Lagos.

Investigators also confirmed that Azubike acted independently and had no recognition or backing from any legitimate chieftaincy authority in the state. The Command therefore urged Lagosians to disregard his claims and ignore misleading publications circulating on social media.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, cautioned residents to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to fraudsters. He assured the public that the suspects would be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

“Let me reassure Lagosians of our unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that criminals who attempt to deceive or defraud the public face the full weight of the law,” CP Jimoh said.

The police emphasized that maintaining peace, order, and security remains their top priority as the case continues.
