Soludo Commissions Nigeria’s First Free Psychiatric Hospital Built by Evangelist Ebuka Obi

Governor Charles Soludo has commissioned a multi-million naira psychiatric hospital and elderly home built by the Seraphic Homes Foundation, a non-profit initiative founded by the Spiritual Director of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, Evangelist Chukwuebuka Anozie Obi.

The N600 million facility, located in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area, is designed to provide completely free psychiatric care to individuals battling mental health challenges. It is the first of its kind in Nigeria.

The inauguration comes barely five months after Evangelist Ebuka opened a large orphanage and elderly people’s home in Mgbirichi, Owerri, Imo State, which offers free care, accommodation, and education up to the university level for orphans, as well as shelter and welfare for the aged.

Speaking at the ceremony, Evangelist Ebuka disclosed that the hospital would provide comprehensive services including diagnosis, treatment, medication, rehabilitation, accommodation, and welfare — all at no cost to patients or their families. He added that from next month, four vehicles would be deployed across Anambra to pick up mentally challenged persons from the streets and bring them in for treatment.

“This is my childhood vision. I have travelled to many parts of the world, and you don’t see mentally challenged people roaming the streets in the western world. It is only here that this happens. I want to change that reality,” he said.

Evangelist Ebuka also revealed plans to extend similar projects to Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Rivers, and other states across the country.

In his remarks, Governor Soludo commended the evangelist for what he described as an extraordinary humanitarian gesture, pledging government support for the facility. He promised to construct the access road to the hospital, connect it to the national grid, and provide financial assistance to sustain its operations.

“Evangelist Ebuka Obi has demonstrated the true essence of Christianity by this act. His vision complements our administration’s commitment to supporting the poor and vulnerable,” the governor said.

The Seraphic Homes Foundation described the Aguleri project as the beginning of a new chapter in Nigeria’s healthcare and social support system, where love, faith, and compassion complement medical science to transform lives.

“The vision is to create a society where the mentally challenged are no longer abandoned on the streets, but embraced, treated, rehabilitated, and empowered to live meaningful lives,” the foundation stated.
