POCACOV Condemns Viral Video of Students in Illicit Acts, Calls for Collective Action Against Youth Vices
The Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) has expressed strong concern over a viral video allegedly showing students of Excel College, Ejigbo, engaging in smoking and alcohol consumption inside a dormitory.
Describing the incident as deeply troubling, POCACOV noted that such cases are not isolated, as similar reports of students indulging in vices have emerged from schools across Nigeria and beyond. The organisation warned that the trend poses a serious threat to the moral fabric of society.
In a statement, POCACOV stressed that the normalization of smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, and cultism among young people undermines academic progress, corrupts values, and sets many students on a destructive path that could ultimately lead to crime and broken futures.
The organisation emphasized that the responsibility of curbing such behaviours cannot rest on schools alone. It urged parents, religious institutions, community leaders, and society at large to play active roles in instilling discipline and positive values in young people.
“Every child lost to vices represents not only a family tragedy but also a setback to the nation’s collective development,” POCACOV stated.
While investigations into the Ejigbo incident are ongoing, POCACOV advised schools nationwide to strengthen guidance and counselling units, enforce strict supervision in dormitories, and collaborate with security agencies and community stakeholders. It also stressed the need for advocacy, mentorship, and empowerment programmes that provide students with positive alternatives such as skill acquisition, sports, and creative engagements.
Reaffirming its commitment, POCACOV said it will intensify its preventive campaigns, broaden outreach to schools and communities, and work closely with government agencies, civil society, and international partners to create safer and healthier learning environments.
“Together, we must protect our youths from the traps of vices. Saving the youths today means saving the future of our nation and Africa at large,” the statement added.
