Intoxicated Driver Dies in Midnight Crash at Alaka Under Bridge, LASTMA, Police Recover Body

A motorist reportedly driving under the influence of alcohol lost his life in a lone fatal accident late Saturday night at the Alaka Under Bridge, Surulere, Lagos.

The incident, which occurred around 11:45 p.m. on October 25, 2025, involved a navy-blue Toyota Camry with registration number EKY 311 GK, said to be travelling at high speed inward Iponri when the driver lost control and the vehicle somersaulted multiple times before crashing.

Operatives of the newly inaugurated Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) 24-hour Night Operations Squad, who were on patrol within the Surulere axis, swiftly responded to the scene, secured the area, and prevented further accidents.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver was allegedly intoxicated, a condition that impaired his judgment and led to the crash. LASTMA personnel promptly alerted officers from the Bode Thomas Police Division, who documented the scene and later released the body of the deceased to his wife and family members after they were contacted through the mobile phone recovered from the wreckage.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the tragedy as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving.

He urged motorists to remain cautious, particularly during the Ember Months, which are often associated with increased road traffic and accidents.

Bakare-Oki noted that the recently concluded ‘LASTMA Ember Months Stakeholders’ Forum’ emphasized the need to intensify campaigns against drunk driving under the theme “Safe Roads, Safe Lives… LASTMA Cares.”

He reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives through continuous enforcement, public enlightenment, and collaboration with security and emergency agencies.

The LASTMA boss further advised all road users to avoid reckless behavior and comply with traffic laws, stressing that the agency’s 24-hour operation aims not only at enforcement but also at swift emergency response and life preservation across Lagos.
