Lagos State Inaugurates Technical Working Group for Introduction of Measles-Rubella Vaccine

In a major step towards strengthening child healthcare and preventing infectious diseases, the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB) has inaugurated a Technical Working Group (TWG) to oversee the introduction of the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine into the State’s Routine Immunization (RI) schedule.

The event, held at The Zone Hub in Gbagada, also featured the 2025 Quarter 3 Routine Immunization Review Meeting and brought together key players from the health sector, including representatives of development partners, health districts, and related agencies.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Permanent Secretary, LSPHCB, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, mni, described the development as a “defining moment” in the State’s public health journey. He noted that the introduction of the MR vaccine represents “a bold step towards protecting our children from the dual threats of measles and rubella.”

“Each vaccine dose is a promise kept — a promise that no child will suffer or die from a preventable disease,” Dr. Mustafa said.

He explained that the newly inaugurated Technical Working Group will coordinate planning, logistics, training, and communication to ensure a smooth and data-driven rollout of the MR vaccine across the State.

Dr. Mustafa commended the collaboration between the State Government and its development partners — including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), and the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) — for their continued support in strengthening immunization systems.

In her remarks, the Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr. Veronica Iwayemi, emphasized that the introduction of the MR vaccine is “not just another activity on the calendar but a major leap forward” in safeguarding children across Lagos. She urged all stakeholders to maintain strong collaboration and innovative approaches to close existing gaps and boost immunization coverage in every local government area.

Dr. Mustafa expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat for their leadership and sustained investment in the health sector. He reaffirmed that the administration’s vision of “a healthy Lagos for a productive population” continues to inspire strategic reforms and infrastructural development in the State’s health system.

Officially inaugurating the TWG, Dr. Mustafa charged members to serve with diligence, innovation, and integrity, ensuring that their efforts translate into healthier children and stronger immunization outcomes.

He concluded by reiterating the State Government’s unwavering commitment to making health a lasting legacy for all residents of Lagos State.
