LASTMA Impounds 155 Vehicles in Major Clampdown on Illegal Garages and Roadside Parks on Lagos Island
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has intensified its enforcement campaign against illegal garages, roadside parks, and shanties across Lagos Island, impounding 155 vehicles, including tricycles and heavy-duty trucks, operating without authorization.
The large-scale operation, supervised by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, targeted unapproved parking areas, makeshift structures, and informal trading clusters that have long contributed to traffic congestion, environmental hazards, and security concerns in the metropolis.
According to Hon. Giwa, the clampdown aligns with the State Government’s newly strengthened 24-hour traffic management mandate and forms part of efforts to ensure smooth vehicular movement ahead of the festive season.
He emphasized that Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to maintaining law and order across all transport corridors through strict enforcement of regulations and zero tolerance for all infractions.
“Illegal garages, unregulated markets, and roadside shanties have continued to frustrate efforts to achieve a free-flowing traffic system in Lagos. These impoundments send a clear message that the government will not tolerate any activity capable of disrupting public order or endangering lives and property,” Giwa stated.
The enforcement operation covered major areas including Ebute-Ero, Oke-Arin Market, Odofin Street, Elegbata, and Marina (Oando Under Bridge)—locations notorious for traffic gridlock and obstruction caused by indiscriminate trading and parking.
Officials noted that these illegal activities not only block major roads but also pose significant safety risks to pedestrians and legitimate business operators. The clampdown, therefore, aims to restore discipline, enhance road safety, and improve the overall commuting experience for residents.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas commended the state government’s intervention, describing it as a long-overdue step toward reclaiming public spaces and improving the city’s aesthetics.
Hon. Giwa assured that the enforcement would continue and extend to other parts of the state where similar illegalities persist. He urged motorists, traders, and transport operators to comply with all traffic and environmental regulations voluntarily, noting that self-discipline remains crucial to achieving a functional and orderly transport system.
He further encouraged the public to report broken-down or abandoned vehicles to LASTMA via its emergency hotlines: 0810000527862, stressing that “adherence to traffic laws is not just a legal duty but a civic responsibility.”
“The ultimate goal of the Lagos State Government is to create a cleaner, safer, and more livable city for all residents,” Giwa added.
