LASTMA Warns Against Blocking Roads Ahead of Festive Season

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned residents, religious bodies, event organisers and community leaders against obstructing access roads during activities planned for the forthcoming festive season.

The Agency expressed concern over the recurring practice where celebrants, worship centres, event planners and street revellers take over major and inner roads, causing avoidable gridlock, safety hazards and discomfort for motorists.

According to LASTMA, all roads—whether major routes or inner streets—are public property and must not be converted into venues for private celebrations or religious gatherings.

Event centres, lounges, clubs and similar recreational facilities, particularly those in busy areas such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and Shongotedo, were also directed to provide proper parking for their customers. Establishments whose patrons regularly park on the roads risk strict enforcement actions, heavy penalties and possible closure as provided by traffic laws.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, issued the warning during an inspection tour of major traffic corridors across the State over the weekend.

He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to ensuring free movement of vehicles, persons and goods throughout the festive season, particularly a period known for increased celebrations and heightened traffic activities.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA officers would intensify surveillance, improve visibility and adopt proactive traffic management strategies to prevent obstruction, curb illegal parking and suppress other traffic violations.

He urged residents and event organisers to act responsibly by obtaining necessary permits, making proper logistical arrangements and cooperating fully with LASTMA and other relevant government agencies to ensure a safe and congestion-free festive period.

The LASTMA boss warned that the Agency would not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against anyone or any establishment that violates traffic regulations or impedes the right of Lagosians to free movement.

He added that LASTMA has strengthened its operational system to guarantee quick responses to emergencies, traffic incidents and the swift removal of broken-down vehicles across the State.
