Olowa Restates Commitment to Workers’ Welfare at Lagos NULGE Branch Chairmen’s Meeting

Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and head of Conference 57 of Local Government Chairmen in Lagos State, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Thursday hosted branch chairmen of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) at the council secretariat, reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improved welfare for local government workers.

Delivering his keynote address, Hon. Olowa described NULGE as a critical stakeholder in grassroots governance. Identifying himself as a comrade, he commended the union leaders for their commitment and background in unionism, which he said provides a strong foundation for effective representation.

Quoting former U.S. Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, from his book It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership, he said: “Whatever job you're doing, do it well, as you never know who is watching you.”
He added that the productivity of workers remains central to the success of local government administration.

“As leaders at the third tier of government, we recognize that our success is intertwined with the well-being of our workforce. I assure all Conference 58 executives and NULGE members that improved welfare packages and better working conditions remain a priority,” Hon. Olowa said.

The NULGE Chairman for Ibeju-Lekki, Comrade Liafiz Lawal Adaranijo, praised the council boss for his consistent support, describing him as “a father to the union.” He highlighted several benefits enjoyed by workers under the current administration, including the provision of a staff bus and an increase in monthly staff welfare imprest to ₦2 million, among other incentives boosting staff morale.

Speaking on behalf of the branch chairmen, Comrade Arowosafe Adesina expressed appreciation for Hon. Olowa’s proactive engagement with the union, noting that the assurances given would further strengthen the relationship between NULGE and local government leadership.

The meeting also featured discussions on labour rights, productivity improvement, and future welfare strategies. Branch executives from across Lagos State were in attendance, aligning the gathering with ongoing efforts by Conference 58 to deepen inclusive governance.

Dignitaries present included the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mr. Sotubo Adeyemi, and the Head of Budget Department, Mrs. Avoseh Senami, among others.
