Oyo Government Strengthens Workers’ Welfare Oversight, Engages Breweries and Bottling Companies

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of industrial workers as part of its ongoing drive to maintain an industry-friendly environment across the state.

The Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives and Industry, Hon. Adebisi Adeniyi, stated this during a sensitization visit to the Nigerian Breweries and the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) in Ibadan on Tuesday.

According to him, the visit formed part of the routine activities of the Oyo State Industrial Crisis Management Committee, established by Governor Seyi Makinde to promote workers’ welfare and foster harmonious industrial relations.

Represented by the Director of Industry, Engr. (Mrs.) Majeedat Olanrewaju, Hon. Adeniyi said the committee was mandated to bridge welfare gaps between permanent and contract staff in companies operating in the state, while ensuring a conducive and productive work environment.

He noted that the state government prioritises fairness, safety, and mutual respect in the workplace, adding that addressing disparities in employee benefits is essential to boosting productivity.

During the interactive session with management teams and labour union leaders at both companies, the Commissioner identified welfare, safety, and industrial peace as key areas of concern. He specifically advised the management of NBC to expand its restaurant facilities to promote a more hygienic and comfortable dining space for staff.

At the Nigerian Breweries, Brewery Manager Seun Akinwale and Corporate Affairs Manager (West & Midwest), Danjuma John-Ekele, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to employee welfare and safety, emphasising that both permanent and outsourced workers benefit from adequate remuneration and comprehensive welfare packages.

Union leaders, including Comrade Festus Olubiyo of Nigerian Breweries and Comrade Lanbe Lukman of NBC, lauded the cordial working relationships between their members and the respective management teams, describing it as a model for other organisations.

Highlights of the visit included inspections of restaurants, changing rooms, production lines, and restrooms within the facilities.

In their separate remarks, the Corporate Affairs Manager of NBC, Mrs. Ifeoma Okoye, and the Plant Manager, Mr. Andrew Barnabas, expressed the company’s readiness to collaborate fully with the Oyo State Government to enhance compliance with labour regulations and improve workers’ welfare.
