Prominent Lawyers, Activists, Civil Society Leaders Set for Movement for Human Rights Volunteers’ 2025 Annual Summit
Lagos, Nigeria — The Movement for Human Rights Volunteers (MHRV) is set to host its Annual Summit 2025 on Thursday at Mosan Okunola LCDA, Ipaja, Lagos, bringing together leading voices in law, human rights advocacy, and civil society for a critical national discourse.
The theme of this year’s summit is “2027 Elections and Beyond: Is the Nigerian Project Worth Dying to Defend?”
According to the Convener, Comrade Musbau Olatunji Akinyemi, the summit aims to deepen public understanding of citizens’ roles and responsibilities before, during, and after election cycles. He noted that the selected speakers and panelists will interrogate the theme by drawing from Nigeria’s historical struggles under military rule and the nation’s current socio-economic realities.
Akinyemi, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Peaceful Resolution, urged Nigerians—particularly civil society actors—not to lose hope despite ongoing political and governance challenges. He called for sustained commitment to strengthening participatory democracy across the country.
The event will feature HRM Oba Hameed Orelope Laka, the Elegbeda of Egbeda, as Royal Father of the Day. Renowned human rights lawyer, Barr. Femi Falana (SAN), will chair the summit, while Barr. Femi Aborishade, pioneer National Secretary of the National Conscience Party, will deliver the keynote address.
Special Guests of Honour include human rights activist Senator Shehu Sani and former Lagos State Deputy Governor Dame Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire. The Executive Chairman of Mosan Okunola LCDA, Hon. Adunni Akindele, will serve as Chief Host.
The panel of discussants comprises:
- Comrade Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director/CEO, Nigerian Railway Corporation
- Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, President, Women Arise for Change Initiative
- Barr. Malachi Ugwummadu, former President, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR)
In addition, Comrade Afolabi Gbajumo, President, Africans for Human Rights International, and Hon. Seye Oladejo, Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, will deliver keynote presentations.
The 2025 summit will also double as the celebration of 36 years of activism and the 61st birthday of Ambassador Musbau Olatunji Akinyemi, fondly known as Onilegbale.
