Three LASUSTECH Students Die, Seven Injured in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash in Ikorodu

Tragedy struck in Ikorodu on Saturday as three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, lost their lives in a ghastly multiple-vehicle collision at Powerline Junction, before Aleje, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.

The victims — two males and one female — were reportedly crushed to death when a tipper truck heavily laden with sand lost control and rammed into several vehicles and tricycles at high speed. Seven other persons, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries in the accident.

According to preliminary investigations by traffic officials, the unregistered tipper truck suffered a mechanical brake failure while travelling at excessive speed, causing the driver to lose control. The runaway truck ploughed into a Toyota Corolla (SMK 42 AJ), an MPV bus, and four tricycles, resulting in a chain collision that left the scene littered with wreckage and casualties.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) were among the first responders, arriving promptly to rescue victims, prevent secondary accidents, and restore order. They were later joined by personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Odongunyan Unit and officers of the Shagamu Police Division.

The rescue team evacuated the three deceased victims to the mortuary at the General Hospital, Ikorodu, while the injured were rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as “deeply tragic and avoidable,” expressing condolences to the bereaved families and praying for the quick recovery of those injured.

Mr. Bakare-Oki lamented the recurring trend of over speeding, recklessness, and poor vehicle maintenance — particularly defective braking systems — as major causes of fatal road accidents across Lagos.

He cautioned all commercial and heavy-duty vehicle drivers to maintain strict adherence to speed limits, conduct regular mechanical checks, and uphold safety standards to prevent needless loss of lives.

Reiterating LASTMA’s resolve, the General Manager assured Lagosians that the Authority remains committed to ensuring road safety, enforcing traffic discipline, and providing rapid emergency response throughout the state.
