Anambra Govt Sets Up Committee to Recover Encroached Public Lands

The Anambra State Government has inaugurated a high-powered committee to identify and recover government-owned lands that have been illegally occupied, grabbed, or misused across the state.

The decision was taken at the 25th meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), recently held at the Government House, popularly known as the Lighthouse, Awka, as part of broader efforts to strengthen land administration and safeguard public assets.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the move underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting government property and ensuring optimal use of state resources for public benefit.

According to him, the committee has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive audit of all government lands in Anambra State, identify those that have been encroached upon or misappropriated, and initiate steps for their recovery.

“The government will no longer tolerate illegal occupation or misuse of its lands. All necessary legal and administrative measures will be deployed to reclaim these assets,” Mefor stated.

He explained that the committee will work in collaboration with relevant ministries, agencies, and security outfits to enforce compliance, including the removal of illegal occupants and structures where necessary.

Beyond recovery, the committee is also tasked with recommending measures to prevent future encroachment and ensuring that reclaimed lands are deployed strictly for projects and initiatives that advance the welfare and development of Anambra residents.

The state government further called on members of the public to support the exercise by providing credible information on illegal activities involving government lands.

Officials expressed confidence that the committee’s work will enhance transparency in land management and contribute significantly to the state’s development drive.
