Anambra Kicks Off Yuletide with Grand Onwa Dezemba Christmas Carol in Awka

The Anambra State Government has announced the commencement of its 2025 Yuletide celebrations with the Onwa Dezemba Christmas Carol/Cankata, scheduled to hold today, December 20, at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, by 4:00 pm.

The event, according to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Aburime, is designed as a solemn yet joyful prelude to Christmas, bringing together residents from across the state to reflect on the true essence of the season—love, faith, gratitude, and unity.

Aburime described the carol service as more than a musical gathering, noting that it represents a moment for Ndi Anambra to pause from the pressures of daily life and reconnect with the deeper meaning of Christmas. He said the Alex Ekwueme Square will be transformed into a glowing centre of worship and celebration, featuring choirs from across the state performing timeless Christmas classics such as O Holy Night, Silent Night, and Jingle Bells, alongside cherished Igbo Christmas hymns.

He added that the inclusion of traditional Cankata rhythms, cultural dances, and storytelling will further enrich the evening, creating a blend of spirituality and cultural expression that reflects the identity and values of the Anambra people.

“The Christmas Carol/Cankata is our collective moment of thanksgiving and reflection. It brings families, friends, and communities together, reminding us of the bonds that unite us as Ndi Anambra,” Aburime stated.

He noted that the event is expected to attract residents returning from within and outside the country for the holidays, providing an opportunity for reunion, shared worship, and communal celebration in a peaceful atmosphere.

Aburime also assured residents that adequate security arrangements have been put in place by the state government under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, to ensure a safe and orderly event.

He encouraged Ndi Anambra to turn out in large numbers, dressed in festive colours, to participate fully in what he described as the official spiritual countdown to Christmas Day.

As the festive season gathers momentum, the Onwa Dezemba Christmas Carol is expected to set the tone for a season of joy, reflection, and renewed hope across Anambra State.
