Federal Government Temporarily Opens Section 1 of Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to Ease Festive Traffic

The Federal Government has temporarily opened Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility during the festive season in Lagos.
The 47-kilometre stretch, running from Ahmadu Bello Way Junction in Victoria Island to Eleko Village Junction along the Lekki Peninsula, was flagged open on Friday at a brief ceremony held at Ahmadu Bello Way.
The temporary opening follows directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, aimed at ensuring seamless movement for residents and commuters amid increased yuletide travel. The six-lane dual carriageway, being constructed by Hitech Construction Company, is part of the ambitious Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project designed to connect Nigeria’s coastal states, stimulate economic growth, boost tourism, and enhance regional integration.
Delivering a goodwill message at the event, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, described the project as a transformative development for communities within his jurisdiction.
“The coastal road is now a reality. This project reflects the bold and audacious vision of Mr. President. What Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has is vision, and we thank God for gifting Nigeria such a leader,” Olowa said. “For the people of Ibeju-Lekki, this highway is a game changer.”
Speaking on behalf of Conference 57, Olowa noted the wider significance of the project for local governments across Lagos State. He commended the Ministry of Works, under the leadership of the Minister, Senator David Umahi, CON, FNSE, for what he described as commendable progress, while also acknowledging the support and collaboration of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
Earlier, Senator Umahi, who inspected the project site, praised the contractors for completing critical sand filling and paving works ahead of schedule.
“With just three kilometres of sand filling outstanding at the onset of our review, the team has delivered a world-class infrastructure that not only addresses current traffic challenges but also lays the foundation for future prosperity,” the minister said.
The opening ceremony attracted several dignitaries, including local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and representatives of government agencies.
