Ibeju-Lekki Council Begins Waste Evacuation Along Akodo Beachfront

Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, December 13, 2025

The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has commenced a large-scale waste evacuation exercise along the Akodo beachfront as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and protect the area’s coastal ecosystem.

The exercise, approved by the Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, is aimed at removing accumulated refuse and debris that pose risks to public health, the environment, and the tourism potential of the coastal communities.

Officials from the Department of Environmental Services, working in collaboration with the Cleaner Ibeju-Lekki Initiative, deployed heavy-duty equipment and manual labour to clear large volumes of waste from strategic points along the beachfront. According to the council, the exercise forms part of a broader environmental sanitation drive of the current administration.

Residents, including youths and elders from the affected coastal communities, commended the council chairman for what they described as timely and proactive intervention. They noted that the cleanup would help restore the natural beauty of the beaches, enhance tourism prospects, and reduce health risks associated with indiscriminate waste dumping.

The council said the exercise would continue over the coming days and urged residents to support sustainable waste management practices to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.
