Lagos Government Holds Emergency Meeting on Road Safety, Threatens Strict Action Against Reckless Drivers
Lagos – In response to a rising number of road traffic accidents across the state, the Lagos State Government convened an emergency multi-agency meeting on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja. The meeting brought together key stakeholders responsible for road safety, traffic management, infrastructure, and emergency response.
The session was coordinated by the Nigeria Police and attended by senior officials including Dr. Ayo Ogunsan, Executive Secretary/CEO of Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF); Mr. Peter Gbejemede, Director of Operations, LASTMA; DCC Adeyemi Bashina, FRSC; Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service; and representatives from the Federal Controller of Works. Senior police officers from various commands were also present.
Addressing the press, Dr. Ayo Ogunsan expressed concern over the surge in fatal road accidents during the Yuletide season. He emphasized the government’s proactive stance in coordinating an intelligence-driven, solution-oriented approach to reduce traffic-related fatalities. “Lagos, as a global city and economic nerve centre, must uphold the highest standards of road safety,” he said.
Dr. Ogunsan also called on transport unions, fleet operators, and motorists to embrace collective responsibility, warning that the government would fully support strict enforcement against reckless driving, overloading, and traffic violations. He described road safety as a shared civic duty essential to protecting lives and sustaining Lagos’ economic vitality.
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, said the meeting was convened to confront the recent spike in fatal accidents and restore order on the roads. He noted that while overall crime had been low in recent months, reckless driving would no longer be tolerated. “Driving has rules, it has guidelines, and it’s a procedure you must follow under the Road Traffic Act,” Jimoh stressed.
The police and other agencies plan to implement a series of measures, including joint enforcement operations, stricter monitoring of articulated vehicles, impoundment of erring vehicles, and enhanced policing of pedestrian bridges. “Our joint enforcement team will ensure prompt arrest and prosecution of all offenders,” Jimoh added.
DCC Adeyemi Bashina highlighted the FRSC’s Safe to Load initiative, which monitors fuel tankers at loading points to ensure compliance with safety standards, contributing to a sharp reduction in tanker explosions.
LASTMA’s Mr. Peter Gbejemede said enhanced collaboration between agencies would improve incident management and public compliance, assuring that traffic accidents in Lagos would reduce drastically with coordinated efforts.
The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and improving road safety across the metropolis, especially during the high-traffic festive season.
