LASTMA Honours Officer Olatunfe Oluwole John as Man of the Year 2025
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has honoured a Senior Traffic Officer, Mr. Olatunfe Oluwole John, with the prestigious LASTMA Man of the Year 2025 award in recognition of his exceptional humanity, courage and professional dedication.
Mr. Olatunfe, who is attached to Zone 20 (PWD, Lagos), was celebrated by the management and workforce of the agency for his exemplary conduct while on duty along the BRT corridor by PWD on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
Speaking at the award ceremony, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the honour followed the officer’s outstanding display of empathy and professionalism during a road traffic accident involving a commercial motorcycle rider and a female pedestrian, who reportedly went into severe convulsions after the collision.
According to Bakare-Oki, Officer Olatunfe immediately took charge of the situation, acting as a first responder by administering prompt first aid to stabilise the injured woman. He further demonstrated rare commitment by securing a tricycle to convey both victims to Mayfair Hospital, Agege, where he stayed to ensure the woman received urgent medical attention.
In a deeply touching show of compassion, the officer reportedly prayed for the victim’s recovery and went beyond his official duties by using her mobile phone to contact her family members, ensuring that her father and siblings arrived at the hospital before he returned to his duty post.
The General Manager disclosed that an onlooker unknowingly recorded the incident and shared it on social media, where it attracted widespread commendation and eventually caught the attention of LASTMA management.
Bakare-Oki also revealed that Officer Olatunfe ensured accountability by compelling the commercial rider involved in the accident to take full responsibility, including the settlement of all medical expenses incurred during the victim’s treatment.
“In recognition of his selfless service, integrity and humane disposition, the Authority issued him a formal letter of commendation, promoted him from Choke Point Officer to 2nd Bravo, Zone 20, and awarded him a cash reward,” the General Manager stated.
He noted that the recognition was intended to reinforce the agency’s core values and encourage other officers to emulate such exemplary conduct.
“This award sends a clear message that excellence, compassion, integrity and outstanding service delivery will always be recognised and rewarded in LASTMA. Officer Olatunfe represents the true spirit of our mandate to protect lives and ensure order on Lagos roads,” Bakare-Oki added.
The conferment of the LASTMA Man of the Year 2025 award underscores the Authority’s commitment to professionalism, human dignity and the promotion of exemplary conduct within the state’s traffic management system.
