Onwa Dezemba: Anambra Set for City Lockdown as Gen Z Block Party Kicks Off Festive Season

Anambra State is set to come alive as the 2025 Ọnwa Dezemba festivities begin with a major Gen Z–focused City Block Party scheduled for December 18 at the Awka City Stadium, by Solution Fun City.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Christian Aburime, said the event is designed to officially usher in the festive season with vibrant youth-driven entertainment, culture and community engagement.

According to Aburime, the City Block Party goes beyond a routine social gathering, promising an electrifying mix of music, live performances, dance battles and high-energy entertainment curated to resonate with the Gen Z audience. He noted that the event will feature a blend of amapiano, Afrobeats, hip-hop and modern highlife sounds, celebrating both contemporary trends and Anambra’s rich cultural roots.

The initiative, he said, reflects the youth-friendly vision of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, who is committed to positioning Anambra as a safe, secure and exciting destination during the festive season. Adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable experience for all attendees.

Aburime explained that the City Block Party is also about fostering connection, creativity and a shared sense of identity among young people of Anambra origin, whether resident in the state or visiting from other parts of the country.

He added that the Awka City Stadium will be transformed into a dynamic creative space, offering opportunities for social interaction, digital content creation and real-life networking in an atmosphere of fun and freedom.

Participants can also expect surprises on the night, including guest DJs, special performances, interactive challenges and spotlights on emerging local talents, all aimed at building community spirit and showcasing Anambra’s vibrant youth culture.

The City Block Party will serve as the opening event for a series of Ọnwa Dezemba activities lined up across the state, including carol services, masquerade displays, comedy shows and other cultural and entertainment programmes.

Aburime urged young people to come out in large numbers, describing the event as a unique opportunity to celebrate, connect and kick off the festive season in grand style.

He called on residents and visitors to be part of the experience on December 18, as Awka takes centre stage as a hub of festive excitement and youth expression during Ọnwa Dezemba.
