Two Dead in Ilubirin Crash: LASTMA Intensifies Call for Speed Regulation

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep grief over a fatal accident that claimed the lives of a police officer and a scavenger at Ilubirin, inward Simpson, on Lagos Island.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of a Toyota Camry with registration number MUS 885 JA was travelling at an excessive speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The car veered off its lane and rammed into the scavenger and a police officer who was riding a motorcycle. Both victims died on the spot.

LASTMA officers stationed in the area immediately responded, cordoned off the accident site, and apprehended the driver, who reportedly attempted to flee. He was subsequently handed over to personnel of the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and prosecution. The accidented vehicle was also evacuated to prevent secondary collisions and restore traffic flow.

Speaking during a visit to the scene, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, offered condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased, describing the incident as a heartbreaking consequence of reckless driving. He emphasized that excessive speed remains one of the major causes of preventable road deaths.

Bakare-Oki urged motorists to strictly observe government-approved speed limits and maintain road discipline at all times. He further reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to continuous public enlightenment on road safety and encouraged all road users, especially drivers, to adopt responsible driving habits to avert avoidable tragedies.
