Two Killed, Two Injured in Separate Lagos Crashes as LASTMA Warns Against Speeding

Two people were killed and two others seriously injured in separate early-morning accidents in Lagos on Monday, prompting the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to renew its warning on speed limit compliance across the state.

The first accident, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge inward Berger on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, claimed the lives of two occupants of an unregistered vehicle. According to preliminary reports, the car was travelling at high speed when it rammed into a moving, fully loaded trailer. The impact was fatal, and both occupants died on the spot. The trailer driver reportedly fled the scene with the vehicle.

LASTMA’s 24-hour Night-Gang Team, deployed for midnight surveillance in the corridor, quickly responded, removing the victims from the road and towing the wreckage to prevent secondary accidents. Officers from the Isheri Police Division provided additional security support, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) handled the evacuation of the remains.

In a separate incident at about 5:00 a.m., an empty tanker collided with a pure-water distribution van (registration number SMK 67 XH) near the UNILAG waterfront inward Lagos Island on the Third Mainland Bridge. Two persons sustained serious injuries and were stabilised by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to a medical facility for further treatment.

Despite the tragic events, LASTMA officers continued traffic control operations on both corridors to prevent further hazards.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the affected families and described the loss of life as avoidable. He condemned reckless speeding and disregard for traffic regulations, stressing the importance of strict adherence to prescribed speed limits.

Bakare-Oki commended the swift response and professionalism of the Night-Gang Teams and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to round-the-clock traffic surveillance and rapid intervention in line with the state government’s safety mandate.
