Delivery Rider Badly Injured as Ambulance Driving One-Way Causes Crash on Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge

A delivery motorcyclist sustained a serious leg fracture on Monday following a collision with a private ambulance that was driving against traffic on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge inward Maryland, Lagos.

The accident occurred amid heavy gridlock caused by the aftermath of an earlier truck fire on the Ikorodu Road corridor, which left the entire stretch in slow-moving traffic.

According to reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the private ambulance, with registration number BED 508 EA, was transporting a pregnant woman on oxygen support when the driver decided to take a one-way route at high speed. The reckless manoeuvre resulted in a violent crash with the delivery rider, who was lawfully using his lane.

LASTMA officers quickly alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which deployed two ambulances for emergency response. The pregnant woman and her life-support equipment were safely transferred into one LASAMBUS ambulance, while the second ambulance conveyed the severely injured motorcyclist to the nearest hospital.

The driver of the ambulance was arrested at the scene and handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

LASTMA personnel removed the damaged ambulance and wrecked motorcycle from the road and transferred both vehicles to the police station. Police operatives provided security support throughout the rescue effort.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the dangerous decision to drive against traffic, describing one-way driving as “unlawful and completely unacceptable.” He urged all emergency vehicle operators to strictly follow traffic regulations, even when conveying critical patients, to prevent needless accidents.

Bakare-Oki wished the injured motorcyclist and the expectant mother a speedy recovery and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining order on Lagos roads.
