Detty December: Giwa Commends Lagosians, LASTMA Officers for Smooth Traffic During 24-Hour Night Operations
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, has commended Lagos residents for their high level of civic responsibility and adherence to traffic regulations during the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) 24-hour Night Gang Operations carried out across the state during the 2025 “Detty December” festive period.
Giwa gave the commendation at the weekend while hosting officers and men of LASTMA at the New Year White Party and Recognition of Meritorious Service, organised to honour the agency’s personnel for their dedication and outstanding performance.
He attributed the relative orderliness and improved safety recorded on major Lagos roads during the typically congested festive season to the cooperation of motorists and commuters, noting that their voluntary compliance significantly enhanced LASTMA’s operational effectiveness.
According to him, the 2025 Detty December period, usually marked by heavy traffic, increased night-time social activities and intense road usage, stood out for the unprecedented level of discipline displayed by road users. He said this development ensured smooth vehicular movement along strategic corridors such as Ikoyi, Victoria Island and the Lekki–Ajah axis, even during late-night hours.
“The success recorded during the 24-Hour Night Gang Operations reflects a growing culture of traffic consciousness and civic maturity among Lagosians. The patience and law-abiding attitude demonstrated by road users deserve commendation,” Giwa said.
The Special Adviser also praised Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support and commitment to strengthening the transportation sector. He noted that the Governor’s investments in logistics, personnel welfare, capacity building and policy reforms have continued to reposition LASTMA as a more responsive and professional traffic management agency.
Looking ahead, Giwa disclosed that LASTMA is set to adopt a more technology-driven approach to traffic and incident management in 2026. He explained that the new strategy would involve the deployment of real-time surveillance systems, rapid-response mechanisms and data-driven operations aimed at reducing road incidents and improving response times.
“In the new year, LASTMA will transition from routine traffic control to proactive incident management, leveraging technology to make Lagos roads safer and more efficient,” he stated.
He urged Lagosians to sustain the culture of compliance and mutual respect on the roads, stressing that effective traffic management requires collective responsibility between government agencies and the public.
The New Year get-together also served as a platform to recognise and reward LASTMA officers who distinguished themselves in the discharge of their duties. Top government officials and key stakeholders were in attendance, as outstanding officers received gift items in appreciation of their service.
