Giwa Cracks Down on Traffic Lawlessness as LASTMA Apprehends Bullion Van Driver for One-Way Violation
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on traffic lawlessness following the apprehension of a bullion van driver who violated one-way traffic regulations in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, disclosed that the driver, identified as Mr. Daniel Ikede, was arrested on Monday after he was caught driving against the legally designated flow of traffic along the Chevron axis en route to Ajah.
According to Giwa, the offence contravenes provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, which categorises one-way driving as a serious traffic violation due to its grave threat to public safety and traffic orderliness.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the bullion van had departed from First Bank, Chevron axis, and was allegedly following a police escort vehicle at the time of the infraction. Mr. Ikede reportedly admitted to driving in the prohibited direction while trailing the escort.
However, while the bullion van was successfully intercepted through the swift intervention of traffic enforcement officers, members of the police escort team allegedly fled the scene, evading arrest.
Reacting to the incident, Hon. Giwa condemned the act, describing it as a reckless display of impunity and abuse of perceived privilege.
He stressed that no individual, vehicle or institution is exempt from the law, regardless of status, assignment or the presence of security escorts.
“One-way driving remains one of the most deadly traffic violations on Lagos roads, often leading to avoidable loss of lives, destruction of property and severe traffic disruption,” Giwa said.
The Special Adviser reiterated that the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will continue to enforce traffic laws strictly, impartially and without exception.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), motorists—private, commercial, corporate and security-assisted—were reminded that compliance with traffic regulations is mandatory and non-negotiable.
LASTMA warned that any violation of traffic laws will attract decisive enforcement actions in line with the state’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring smooth vehicular movement across the metropolis.
The apprehended driver and the bullion van have since been taken into custody and will be prosecuted accordingly.
