LASTMA Arrests Tanker Driver After Fatal One-Way Crash Kills Motorcyclist, Passenger in Epe

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested the driver of an empty Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker following a fatal road crash that claimed the lives of a commercial motorcyclist and his passenger at Poka Junction, inward Araga, along the Epe–Ijebu Road in Epe, Lagos State.

According to LASTMA, preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcyclist, who was conveying a male passenger, was riding against traffic on a prohibited one-way route, in clear violation of traffic regulations, when he was hit by the speeding tanker. The impact of the collision was severe, resulting in the instant death of both the rider and his passenger.

LASTMA operatives were said to have swiftly responded to the incident, demonstrating professionalism and prompt emergency action. The tanker driver was immediately apprehended, while the accident scene was cordoned off to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety. Relevant security agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were also notified in line with standard emergency protocols.

The remains of the deceased victims, alongside the arrested tanker driver, were subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Noforija Police Division for further investigation and necessary legal action.

To ease traffic flow and prevent congestion along the busy corridor, LASTMA officials promptly evacuated the tanker from the roadway, restoring normal vehicular movement in the area.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the crash as a tragic and avoidable loss caused by disregard for traffic laws.

He warned commercial motorcyclists and other road users against dangerous practices such as one-way driving, excessive speeding and attempting to compete with heavy-duty vehicles for right of way.

“This unfortunate loss of lives was completely avoidable. If the motorcyclist had remained on the correct lane and adhered to traffic rules, this tragedy would not have occurred,” Giwa said.

The Special Adviser reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government to stricter enforcement of traffic laws in order to protect lives and property, urging all road users to embrace responsible driving habits and strict compliance with regulations.

LASTMA also appealed to the motoring public to see traffic laws as vital safety measures designed to preserve lives and promote orderly use of the state’s roads.
