Suspected Armed Drug Traffickers Attack Ogun Customs Officers, Two Critically Injured

Ogun State, January 25, 2026 – Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) are in critical condition after being attacked by suspected armed drug traffickers during an anti-smuggling operation in Iwoye, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun I Area Command confirmed that the attack occurred on Thursday, January 22, around 4:00 pm, while officers were intercepting a 12-tyre truck believed to be carrying a large consignment of illicit drugs and other prohibited items.

Before backup could arrive, the suspects reportedly mobilized a group of armed hoodlums who mounted barricades at nine strategic points, preventing reinforcements from reaching the scene. The attackers opened fire on the Customs officers and disabled a patrol vehicle by shooting out its tyres, creating a volatile situation.

Two officers sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving intensive medical care. Taking advantage of the chaos and barricades, the smugglers escaped with the intercepted truck.

Deputy Comptroller Olukayode Afeni, Acting Customs Area Controller of Ogun I, condemned the attack as barbaric, emphasizing that such acts would not deter the Service from its mandate to combat smuggling and protect national security.

He also urged traditional rulers and community leaders to caution residents against participating in smuggling activities or attacks on security personnel, warning that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

The NCS has launched an investigation to track down and apprehend all individuals involved in the attack and reassures law-abiding members of the public of their safety, reiterating its commitment to border security and public protection.
