Fourteen Escape Death as Commercial Bus Overturns in Okun Ajah, Lagos

Fourteen passengers, including a four-year-old boy and his mother, narrowly escaped death on Wednesday following a lone road traffic accident along Coaster Road, opposite Lafiaji inward Okun Ajah in Lagos.

The accident, which involved a fully loaded Mazda commercial bus with registration number AKD 509 XL, occurred when the vehicle reportedly lost control, somersaulted and overturned, trapping passengers inside the wreckage.

According to a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the (LASTMA), the impact of the crash drew the attention of bystanders and emergency responders in the area.

LASTMA officials were said to have arrived promptly at the scene, where they rescued the injured passengers and coordinated emergency medical assistance.

The four-year-old boy, his mother and two other victims were rushed to the along Abraham Adesanya, Ogombo Road, for urgent medical treatment. Other injured passengers were taken to nearby healthcare facilities by Good Samaritans who assisted in the rescue efforts.

While the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined, the case has been handed over to the Police Division at Abraham Adesanya for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the victims and their families, wishing them a speedy recovery.

He also cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against reckless driving, stressing that no journey is worth risking human lives. He urged strict compliance with speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.

LASTMA reiterated its appeal to road users to remain vigilant, maintain discipline on the roads and prioritise safety at all times.
