Lagos Rounds Off Drivers’ Care Programme at Iyana-Iba, Announces Statewide Expansion

Lagos, February 12, 2026 – The Lagos State Government on Thursday rounded off the  first phase of its Drivers’ Care Programme with a final outreach at Iyana-Iba Motor Park, marking the end of a four-day statewide intervention focused on driver health, safety and professional development.

The initiative, which began earlier in the week at along the Ijora-Apapa corridor, subsequently moved to Eleko Junction in Ibeju-Lekki and Obalende Motor Park before rounding off at Iyana-Iba in Ojo Local Government Area.

Across the various locations, thousands of commercial drivers benefited from free eye screening and prescription glasses, drug testing and sensitization, complimentary recertification training, as well as registration for the mandatory Lagos State Drivers’ Institute permit.

Speaking at the closing event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, described the programme as a strategic intervention designed to tackle preventable road accidents linked to poor health, substance abuse and lack of periodic training among drivers.

“Our drivers remain the backbone of the transportation system in Lagos. When they are medically fit, properly trained and free from substance abuse, our roads become safer and the economy functions more efficiently,” Adekoya said.

He disclosed that the programme would be implemented in phases to ensure broader coverage across the state, noting that the government is determined to reach more commercial drivers in subsequent rounds.

Adekoya also conveyed appreciation to Governor for approving and supporting the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to road safety and social inclusion under its development agenda.

As part of the programme, the facilitated recertification and permit processing for drivers, reinforcing compliance with state transport regulations. Officials of the also conducted drug screening and awareness sessions aimed at discouraging substance abuse among commercial transport operators.

The conclusion of the first phase signals what government officials describe as a sustained effort to improve driver welfare, reduce accident rates and strengthen discipline within Lagos’ transport sector.
