Lagos State Drivers’ Health & Safety Programme Expands to Ibeju-Lekki and Obalende

Lagos, 11 February 2026 – In a demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to driver welfare and road safety, commercial drivers participated in the ongoing Drivers’ Health & Safety Programme, benefiting from free eye tests, drug screening, medical consultations, and recertification training.

The four-day initiative, flagged off on Monday at Lilypond Terminal, Apapa, aims to reach drivers across the state. Day 2 was held at Eleko Junction, Ibeju-Lekki, followed by day 3 at Obalende Motor Park, where drivers received services and participated in substance-abuse awareness sessions conducted in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Speaking at Obalende, Comrade Hassan Adekoya, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transport and Logistics, highlighted the programme’s dual focus on driver health and road safety. “Our drivers are the backbone of Lagos’ transport system. Healthy and alert drivers make our roads safer and our economy stronger. Through eye examinations, drug testing, and free corrective glasses, we are protecting drivers and saving lives,” Adekoya said.

As part of the initiative, the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) has been directed to train and certify drivers free of charge, enhancing professional competence and promoting safe driving habits across the state. Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, General Manager of LASDRI, noted that this measure will help reduce accidents caused by reckless driving and improve discipline among commercial drivers.

The NDLEA also provided counselling and drug awareness, aiming to curb substance abuse among transport operators. Titilope Ogunluyi, Deputy Commander in charge of Narcotics, NDLEA Lagos, emphasised, “Prevention is better than cure. This programme is a model of proactive intervention to keep drivers and the public safe.”

Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the state government for the initiative. Yusuf Ashiru, a professional driver for 13 years, said, “I got free corrective glasses today, which could have cost me a lot. This programme will help reduce road accidents and keep drivers healthy. We hope the government holds this exercise regularly so more drivers can benefit.”

The programme continues Thursday, 12 February, at Iyana-Iba, Ojo Local Government Area, reinforcing the Lagos State Government’s commitment to social inclusion, public safety, and professional development within the transportation sector.
