Dangote Refinery Hits 650,000 bpd Capacity as Crude Distillation Unit, Motor Spirit Block Reach Full Output
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that its Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and Motor Spirit (MS) production block have reached full operational capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), marking a significant milestone for Africa’s largest oil refining facility.
The development follows the successful completion of a scheduled maintenance exercise on both units. According to the company, the refinery has commenced an intensive 72-hour performance test in collaboration with its licensor, UOP, to validate operational efficiency and ensure that all critical parameters meet global standards.
Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, David Bird, described the restoration and optimisation of the CDU and MS Block as a testament to the refinery’s advanced engineering and strong operational capability.
“Our teams have demonstrated exceptional precision and expertise in stabilising both the CDU and MS Block, and we are pleased to see them functioning at optimal efficiency. This performance testing phase enables us to validate the entire plant under real operating conditions. We are confident that the refinery remains firmly on track to deliver consistent, world-class output,” Bird said.
He added that the CDU and MS Block—which comprise the naphtha hydrotreater, isomerisation unit and reformer unit—are now operating steadily at full nameplate capacity. Bird further disclosed that other processing units in the refinery will begin their respective performance test runs in Phase Two, scheduled to commence next week.
The refinery also revealed that during the recent festive period, it supplied between 45 and 50 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily to the domestic market. With the CDU and MS Block now fully restored, the facility is positioned to deliver up to 75 million litres of PMS per day as required.
The milestone, according to the company, reinforces its commitment to boosting Nigeria’s energy security, reducing dependence on fuel imports, and positioning the country as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
Bird expressed appreciation to customers and Nigerians for their continued support, reiterating the refinery’s pledge to produce high-quality refined products while contributing to industrial growth, job creation and economic diversification.
