LASTMA Intercepts Fleeing Truck Driver After Cyclist Killed Under LASUTH Bridge, Ikeja

A yet-to-be-identified cyclist has lost his life in a fatal road accident involving an articulated truck beneath the LASUTH Bridge along the Airport Road corridor in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that the crash occurred at the traffic signal point under the bridge as both the cyclist and a DAF articulated truck approached the roundabout from the Maryland axis.

According to preliminary findings, the cyclist reportedly failed to maintain a safe distance from the moving truck while navigating the roundabout, leading to a collision that resulted in his instant death.

LASTMA operatives who were on duty at the scene promptly intervened and successfully intercepted the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee after the accident. The driver was immediately handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

To prevent a buildup of traffic and avoid secondary accidents, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) were invited to evacuate the remains of the deceased, while traffic flow was swiftly restored.

Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

He urged cyclists and commercial motorcyclists to exercise greater caution on Lagos roads, stressing the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations and personal safety measures.

Hon. Giwa reiterated that cyclists are prohibited from using expressways, highways, and major arterial routes, where the risk to vulnerable road users is significantly higher.

“The Lagos State Government has consistently embarked on sensitisation campaigns through public jingles and documentaries to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on the importance of restricting their movements to inner roads,” he said. “This directive also applies to skateboard users and other non-motorised road users.”

The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic laws, enhancing public awareness, and protecting all road users, while calling on motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to act responsibly to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
