Mother, Son Escape Death as Lexus SUV Overturns Thrice at NYSC Bus Stop Along LASU–Isheri Expressway

A mother and her son on Tuesday morning miraculously survived a horrific auto crash after their Lexus SUV overturned multiple times at the NYSC Bus Stop corridor along the LASU–Isheri Expressway in Lagos, according to the (LASTMA).

A lone but serious traffic accident occurred during peak hours along the busy LASU–Isheri Expressway, sending shockwaves through commuters and motorists within the Lagos State University axis.

Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT was travelling from Isheri inward Igando when it suddenly lost stability. The vehicle reportedly somersaulted three times before coming to a halt in the middle of heavy traffic near the popular NYSC Bus Stop.

Operatives of LASTMA stationed within the corridor swiftly mobilised to the scene, carrying out a coordinated rescue operation. The occupants — a mother and her son — were extricated from the wreckage with visible bruises and mild trauma.

Officials confirmed that the pair narrowly escaped what could have resulted in a fatal incident.

Security personnel from the attached to the Igando Division provided reinforcement at the scene, ensuring effective crowd control and safeguarding the accident site throughout the rescue and evacuation exercise.

Family members of the victims later arrived and conveyed them for further medical evaluation and treatment.

To prevent secondary crashes and ease traffic congestion along the consistently busy expressway, LASTMA officials coordinated the evacuation of the damaged vehicle with support from the (LASEMA). The vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation and necessary administrative procedures.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no lives were lost.

He extended wishes for the speedy recovery of the mother and her son, reiterating the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response, proactive traffic control and sustained road safety enforcement across Lagos.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to strictly observe prescribed speed limits and ensure routine mechanical checks, particularly on critical safety components such as braking systems, before embarking on journeys.

He warned that excessive speed combined with mechanical failure remains a major cause of devastating road crashes on major highways.
