Oyo Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Health, Education as College of Nursing Matriculates 198 Students

 The Oyo State Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the health and education sectors as the matriculated 198 students for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The reaffirmation came during the institution’s third matriculation ceremony held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at its Eleyele campus in Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, described nursing as a vocation rooted in compassion, sacrifice, resilience and an unwavering commitment to humanity. She was represented at the ceremony by Dr. Waheed Lanre-Abass.

According to the Commissioner, the current administration remains intentional about repositioning Oyo State as a pacesetter in healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

“No health system can function effectively without well-trained, competent and motivated healthcare professionals,” she stated.

She noted that the matriculating students are beneficiaries of sweeping reforms undertaken by the government, adding that improvements in infrastructure and accreditation status of the College reflect sustained investment in health facilities and human capital development.

Also addressing the gathering, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Surveyor Segun Olayiwola, commended the College’s management for successfully conducting the admission process and sustaining its reputation for excellence. He was represented by Mr. Raheem Olatubosun.

Describing the institution as a pride of the state, Olayiwola said it has consistently produced nursing professionals whose impact is felt nationally and internationally.

“Nurses are the backbone of healthcare. Your profession is about compassion, care and dedication to humanity. Be diligent, focused and of good conduct. The journey may be challenging, but the rewards outweigh the hindrances,” he advised the students.

In her welcome address, the Provost of the College, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, described the matriculation as the formal commencement of the students’ professional journey into one of the noblest professions globally.

“Nursing is more than a career; it is a calling. From this day forward, you are not just students; you are nurses in training. Society will place lives in your hands, and that trust must never be taken lightly,” she said.

Dr. Owolabi highlighted the College’s comprehensive curriculum, which blends theoretical courses such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, community health, medical-surgical nursing, and maternal and child health with hands-on clinical postings in hospitals and communities.

She warned the students against misconduct, including examination malpractice, absenteeism and falsification of records, stressing that the nursing profession does not accommodate mediocrity.

The ceremony underscored the state government’s resolve to continue strengthening institutions that drive quality healthcare delivery and academic excellence.
