OYOSUBEB, UBEC Begin Distribution of Textbooks, Learning Materials to Oyo Public Schools

The Oyo State Universal Basic Education  (OYOSUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has flagged off the 2024 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Programme with the distribution of instructional materials to public basic schools across Oyo State.

The official ceremony, held on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the OYOSUBEB car park in Agodi, Ibadan , marked the commencement of large-scale supply of core textbooks, learning aids and other institutional materials to public primary and junior secondary schools statewide.

Speaking at the event, OYOSUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, disclosed that the 2024 intervention covers thousands of core subject textbooks and learning materials. These include 19,289 copies each of Primary Mathematics Books 1, 2 and 3; 15,515 copies of Primary English Books 1–3; and 15,111 copies each of Nursery English Books 1, 2 and 3.

Also distributed were 6,673 copies each of Nursery Mathematics Books 1, 2 and 3; 2,500 copies each of Science and Technology Books 1–3; 40,000 six-year Continuous Assessment Cards produced by OYOSUBEB; 6,675 school bags; 6,675 pairs of sandals; 6,675 exercise books; 6,675 pencils; and 6,000 pairs of BESDA sandals.

Dr. Adeniran emphasised that the materials are institutional resources intended to enhance instructional quality and improve learning outcomes in public schools. He urged head teachers, principals and education managers to ensure strict accountability and proper utilisation.

“These materials are not for storage but for active classroom use. Their impact will be measured by improved academic performance and better learning outcomes,” he said.

In her remarks, UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, represented by the Commission’s Zonal Director, Mrs. Beatrice Okei, described the distribution as a reinforcement of hope and a renewed commitment to delivering quality, inclusive and equitable basic education to every Nigerian child.

She noted that the intervention aligns with the agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises education as a foundation for national development through strengthened literacy, numeracy, values and skills acquisition at the basic level.

According to her, UBEC’s statutory mandate includes coordinating the implementation of the Universal Basic Education programme nationwide, disbursing intervention funds to states and the Federal Capital Territory, setting and monitoring minimum standards, and promoting access, equity, quality, transparency and accountability.

She further revealed that UBEC is distributing 15 million school bags, sandals and writing materials nationwide to reduce the number of out-of-school children by easing the financial burden on vulnerable families and encouraging school enrolment and retention.

Describing the initiative as collaborative governance in action, she said the Federal and State Governments are working together to strengthen institutional capacity, improve classroom delivery and ensure that every child in public basic schools has access to essential learning tools.

Also speaking, SUBEB Executive Board member, Dr. Olukemi Adeosun, described the distribution as a significant step toward repositioning basic education in Oyo State, noting that access to relevant textbooks enables learners to prepare ahead of lessons and eases the burden on teachers.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state, Comrade Raji Oladimeji, commended the Oyo State Government and OYOSUBEB leadership for sustained improvements in infrastructure, teacher recruitment and welfare, and called on teachers and learners to make judicious use of the materials.
