 PSC Reaffirms Commitment to Data Privacy at National Data Protection Summit 2026

Abuja, Feb. 5, 2026 — The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reiterated its commitment to strict data privacy compliance, stressing that ethical data management is now central to effective and trustworthy modern policing in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), made this known while delivering a keynote address at the National Data Privacy Summit 2026, organized by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Speaking on the summit’s theme, “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics and Innovation,” Argungu emphasized that data has become a critical tool in crime prevention and detection, marking a significant shift from traditional physical policing methods.

He commended the NDPC and its National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, for what he described as pioneering efforts in strengthening Nigeria’s data protection framework and safeguarding citizens’ personal information.

According to him, the PSC is fully aligned with national data protection standards, particularly in sensitive processes such as police recruitment and personnel management.

“In the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 Police Constables and across all our operations, the Police Service Commission is committed to full compliance with NDPC policies and regulations on data protection,” Argungu stated.

The PSC Chairman also reaffirmed the Commission’s sustained partnership with the NDPC, noting that the collaboration is essential to embedding privacy, ethics, and accountability into law enforcement operations nationwide.

The summit, which held on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, brought together policymakers, regulators, technology experts, and public sector leaders to examine the challenges and opportunities of data privacy in an era of rapidly evolving digital technologies.

The Police Service Commission, a Federal Executive Body, is constitutionally empowered to appoint, promote, and discipline police officers in Nigeria, with the exception of the Inspector-General of Police, in line with the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the PSC Establishment Act, 2001.
