Tinubu Approves Egbetokun’s Resignation as IGP, Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting Police Chief

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police, effective immediately.

Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter to the President, citing pressing family considerations. In accepting the resignation, President Tinubu praised the outgoing police boss for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, noting his professionalism, dedication and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture.

Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term that was scheduled to run until June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act.

To address ongoing security challenges, President Tinubu has approved the elevation of AIG Tunji Disu to the role of Acting Inspector-General of Police. The President expressed confidence that Disu’s operational experience, leadership qualities and deep understanding of policing will provide steady direction for the force during this critical period.

In line with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. If approved, his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to national security, the President emphasised the government’s determination to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance professionalism and ensure that the Nigeria Police Force remains accountable and fully equipped to fulfil its constitutional mandate.
