APC to Opposition: Focus on 2031 Elections, Respect Mandate of Nigerians

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has urged opposition parties to redirect their political energies toward the 2031 elections, rather than attempting what it described as futile efforts to challenge the current mandate given to the ruling party by Nigerians.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on opposition parties to begin preparations for the 2031 general elections, stating that recent political developments indicate they are not ready to mount a credible challenge in the near term.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, the party said while opposition parties play an important role in strengthening democracy, their participation must be guided by realism, responsibility, and respect for the mandate freely given by the electorate.

Oladejo noted that the outcome of recent off-season elections across the country demonstrates the continued confidence Nigerians have in the leadership and development agenda of the ruling party.

According to him, the opposition has so far shown a lack of preparation, cohesion, and seriousness, raising doubts about its ability to present a credible alternative in the next electoral cycle.

The APC spokesman also criticised what he described as the opposition’s last-minute attempts to form alliances and coalitions shortly before the commencement of party primaries.

“It is quite laughable that the same opposition is still desperately shopping for alliances and coalitions just days before the commencement of party primaries,” Oladejo said, adding that such moves expose internal disarray within the ranks of opposition parties.

He argued that rather than dissipating energy contesting what he described as settled mandates through rhetoric and political distractions, opposition parties should channel their efforts toward rebuilding their structures and strategies ahead of the 2031 elections.

Oladejo stressed that governance should not be overshadowed by continuous political campaigning, noting that the APC remains focused on fulfilling its promises to Nigerians.

He said the ruling party is committed to strengthening infrastructure, improving economic opportunities, enhancing security, and ensuring the overall well-being of citizens.

The Lagos APC spokesman further urged opposition parties to adopt constructive engagement and demonstrate maturity in accepting electoral outcomes.

“Democracy thrives not only on competition but also on maturity, foresight, and respect for electoral outcomes,” he said.

Oladejo added that the years leading to 2031 present ample opportunity for opposition parties to reflect, undertake internal reforms, and develop credible alternatives that can resonate with the electorate.

He maintained that Lagosians expect all political actors to contribute positively to peace, stability, and the continued development of the state.

According to him, the APC in Lagos remains committed to its mission of building a greater Lagos for all residents.
